Amber Cold Weather Alert
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a press release on 17 November 2025 announcing an amber Cold-Health Alert for the North East, North West, and Yorkshire & Humber regions of England. This alert is in effect from 12:00 PM on Monday, 17 November until 8:00 AM on Saturday, 22 November.
The amber alert was triggered due to a forecasted prolonged cold spell, which poses significant health risks, especially for:
- People aged 65 and over
- Those with pre-existing health conditions (respiratory, cardiovascular)
- Vulnerable groups such as those sleeping rough
UKHSA warned that the cold weather could lead to increased demand on health services, and a rise in risks like heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections. They advised checking on vulnerable individuals and following guidance on staying safe during cold weather.
What vulnerable people should do:
- Stay warm indoors: Heat rooms to at least 18°C, close curtains, wear layers.
- Keep active: Move around every hour, light exercise indoors.
- Eat and drink well: Regular hot meals and drinks, avoid alcohol.
- Check medications: Ensure prescriptions and emergency contacts are ready.
- Seek help: Call NHS 111 or GP if unwell, dial 999 in emergencies.
- Stay connected: Ask family/friends to check in, contact local support groups.
